How it works

The ingredient in my Airbrush tanning solution uses a compound called dihydroxyacetone (DHA). This natural complex works with your skin’s own proteins to give your skin a 100 percent natural-looking tan colour – without the dangerous and damaging rays of the sun.

I use a spray gun is used to spray a combination of air and tanning solution directly onto the skin, which dries almost immediately. A fine mist solution is gently sprayed directly onto the skin, while you stand in my portable pop up tanning tent. In less than 15 minutes you can have a flawless tan that will develop over the next 4 to 12 hours.

The intensity of colour is dependent upon the DHA concentration in the product as well as each tanner’s individual skin characteristics. The colour developed by the DHA usually lasts 5 to 10 days and begins to fade as the top layer of the skin naturally exfoliates.

Before your tan

For top Airbrush tan performance, proper pre-tan skin preparation is crucial. For the maximum result, before your session, SHOWER and EXFOLIATE the skin. Your skin MUST be clean from all lotions, oils, perfumes, or any product on the skin that would create a barrier or cause the tan to develop unevenly and remove all jewelry. These items act as barriers and can even turn your tan green. Deodorants MUST also be avoided. Spraying over deodorant can result in green rings around arm pit and is difficult to remove.

Waxing, pedicures and facials should be done at least one day prior to your tanning session. Whether you shave or wax is completely up to you, both should be done before the application of the tan. Ideally shaving should be done at least 8 hours before and waxing at least the day before. When waxing ensure that all wax is removed otherwise the tan will stick to the wax and will appear very dark where the wax has not been removed.

You may wear whatever you feel comfortable in. You may choose to wear a bikini, cotton underwear, cotton bra, or nothing at all. It is completely up to you.

If you wear garments during your session you WILL have tan lines and the garment should be washed the same day. Disposable thongs are provided that you can use if you would feel more comfortable. Modesty and appropriate behaviour is expected. You may also want to take into account clothing that you will be wearing over the next few days. For example, if you are getting a tan and want to wear a bra, then think about the style of dress you will be wearing such as a strapless dress. In this circumstance, if you want to wear a bra, a strapless bra is recommended to avoid tan lines.

Ensure any clothing that is worn immediately after the application of the tan is dark in colour to prevent the risk of staining it. After your tan wear loose preferably cotton clothing.

During your tan

In order to create a great Airbrush tan, the most important step in the process is to ask yourself “how do I want to look?” ‘Tan’ means many things to many people. Some people just want a very light conservative glow while others prefer a darker look. What suits one person may not be right for another.

When I arrive at your location you will have a consultation to help you decide exactly what colour you are hoping to achieve; from a healthy glow, to a light, medium, or dark tan. Then, assessing your natural skin colour I will tell you if your goal is realistic or make a recommendation. For example if a pale, ivory skinned person wanted to be really dark it would not be recommended, however your technician could create a really gorgeous medium colour tan.

It is quite possible to do different shades on different parts of the body – such as a light tan on the upper body and face and a medium tan on the legs. Just let me know what your preference is! I will do my utmost to listen to your preferences.

Next you will step into a 4” x 4” x 7” pop-up tent and undress. You may wear disposable spa underwear, your own underwear or nothing at all. If you chose to wear your own undergarments or swim suit it is recommended you have something dark to ensure it will not become discoloured by the spray. Next your nails will be gently covered with a barrier cream to prevent discolouration – if your hair is very light you will be provided with a disposable hair cap. However, you will be sprayed close into the hairline as possible for a natural look.

You will then stand on a towel and I will talk you through all the positions you will stand in so that you can tan all over. It takes just a couple of minutes to be sprayed and you will just feel a cool misting sensation. There is no need to be anxious about closing your eyes and holding your breath as disposable masks are offered. If you choose to forgo the mask, when the time comes to spray your face you will be instructed to close your eyes and take breath – I will do everything possible to make the experience comfortable for you.

Pre-Tan Instructions

Prior to your appointment, clear away any dry, dead skin cells. Do not apply body oils or moisturizer to skin as this can create a barrier on your skin.

Hair removal

Hair removal should be done before your airbrush tan (this includes depilatory creams, waxing or shaving).

Do not create sunless barriers

Deep penetration of the solution is key to beautiful lasting colour so avoid applying anything to the skin that may act as a barrier between the sunless solution and the skin.  DO NOT apply makeup, lotions, creams, deodorants, or perfumes prior to session.

Be Prepared

Wear loose fitting dark coloured clothing and remove jewellery (tight clothing can rub or smear bronzers). It is advisable to have a hair tie and Chapstick at hand and to wear flip flops. Hair appointments should be made before your airbrush tan. Mani/Pedi’s should be done before your airbrush tan.

Post-tan Instructions

Wait at least 10 minutes before getting dressed

Wear dark, loose fitted clothes to put on immediately after your airbrush (yes, sweat pants, NO jeans). The solution may rub off on your clothes, but it does not stain.

Avoid contact with water or sweat (during developing hours)

Exercise, cleaning, or showering, as your airbrush tan is developing during these hours could result in lines or uneven tanning.

A sunless tan will almost always fade when you are submerged in any type of water for any length of time. Avoid long hot showers and baths, and excessive exposure to chlorine in swimming pools and hot tubs. Take care when exercising as excess sweat may cause your tan to fade unevenly.

Switch to darker coloured linens or place a towel down where you lay

Do not sit directly on leather or light fabric seats and furniture after your tanning session. Sit on a towel or cloth instead. If you choose to sleep in your Airbrush tan so that it darkens overnight, please be advised the cosmetic bronzer may transfer onto your sheets and pillow cases. Wear loose fitted clothes to sleep in.

Wait 10-12 hours to shower

Shower with a mild, moisturizing shower gel and a gentle bath poof. You will see some colour wash away from your skin but don’t be concerned by this, as your developed tan is still there. This is completely normal, and was only the cosmetic bronzer (instant tan that you could see after your spray tan). The cosmetic bronzer is used to give immediate tan results, but also so that your technician may see where the solution is applied. While drying, be sure to pat, not rub your skin After your post-tan shower, avoid clothing that chafe or do anything to encourage the skin to shed.

Apply a moisturizer

THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT STEP IN MAXIMIZING YOUR SUNLESS TAN – moisturize at least twice daily. You can extend the life of your tan by nearly double by using a quality moisturizer morning and evening after your first post-tan shower. Use a moisturizer with sunscreen in the morning, and a gradual self tanning moisturizer like Jergens Natural Glow™ at night. Avoid contact with chlorine or excessive sweating and be wary of sweating inside closed toed shoes, as this can lead to premature fading. If you notice uneven or premature fading of your Airbrush tan, you can always correct this by touching up your Airbrush tan with a gradual self-tanner.

Avoid Exfoliating

Avoid any hard scrubbing or exfoliation in the shower, which will remove or lighten the tan (until you are ready for your next tan).
